Americans who use Twitter are more likely than the average adult to be highly active on the Internet and in their communities, according to new survey by Gfk MRI.

The survey found people who use Twitter are highly active when it comes to blogging, video sharing and posting reviews. They are 506% more likely than the average U.S. adult to write a blog, 451% more likely to upload or add video to a Web site, and 314% more likely to post a comment or review on a blog, online forum, message or bulletin board. These active Internet users are also 269% more likely to own an electronic book reader.

In addition to being active online, Twitter users are also socially and politically active. For instance, they index highly for all 17 of the public activities measured by GfK MRI. They are 209% more likely to have written something that has been published, 142% more likely to participate in environmental groups/causes, 141% more likely to be an active member of any group that tries to influence public policy or government, and 103% more likely to have attended a political rally, speech or protest in the last 12 months.

'GfK MRI data clearly indicate that Twitter users are an influential group of people, engaged in a variety of public activities, and willing to share their thoughts through blogging and published works," said Anne Marie Kelly, SVP, Marketing and Strategic Planning at GfK MRI.

"This group of people is also probably interested in finding that next big trend, as illustrated by their higher-than-average ownership of electronic book readers."

Sometime this year, Google's supposed to name several communities in which it'll install high-speed broadband networks, and for the sake of not getting anyone's hopes up, we'll say right here that "sometime" is not now. But a site called Google Fiber for Communities did launch today so that everyone can stay informed and push for further progress.

This fiber network initiative is turning out to be a bigger deal than Google originally imagined. The search giant received almost 1,100 community responses and 200,000 requests from individuals, according to a new post on the Official Google Blog.

So Google Fiber for Communities will serve as a place "where you can learn more about fiber networks and keep up-to-date on our project," the post stated. Interestingly, the post then continued, "You'll also be able to advocate for common-sense federal and local policies that would help fiber deployments nationwide."

Google put together a little video to show how excited people are and applaud their enthusiasm, too (with one interesting line being "what we learn in our trial communities will benefit all communities").

Just don't worry that all of this adds up to a stall tactic. Google still intends to make its picks by the end of the year, meaning it shouldn't be too much longer before we find out what lucky towns and/or cities will see connection speeds of 1 gigabit per second.

The post simply explained, "[I]n the meantime, we hope this site helps to keep the conversation going."

Since we announced our plans to build experimental, ultra high-speed broadband networks, the response has been tremendous. Hundreds of communities and hundreds of thousands of individuals across the country have expressed their interest in the project. We're not going to be able to build in every interested community - our plan is to reach a total of at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people - but we hope to learn lessons from this experiment that will help improve Internet access everywhere.

AdSense publishers who live near Boston, Chicago, or New York - or can travel to one of those cities on short notice this summer - should consider filling out an application and maybe packing a bag. Google's looking for people to participate in what it calls the AdSense in Your City program.

A key note before we get much further: if you don't live near one of those cities, but are interested in the initiative, Google still wants to hear from you. Talia Brodecki, a product market manager, asked on the Inside AdSense Blog that people leave comments suggesting what other areas the company should take into account.

As for what's at stake, Brodecki wrote that the AdSense in Your City program involves members of the AdSense team traveling "to hear directly from you, as well as to share best practices, top optimization tips, and new products."

Get-togethers are small - think 60 people - and Google's method of determining who's allowed to attend favors the first people to request an invitation.

Recordings of the sessions are supposed to be made available online at some point, however, so don't worry too much if you can't make a meeting or aren't issued an invitation.

This program should just represent a welcome opportunity for AdSense publishers to interact with Google representatives and become better-informed.
